Editorial : Dual rear camera magic on Honor 6X

Huawei has been on a roll with the launch of its budget offering, the Honor 6X. In 2017 we have been seeing the trend of having a dual camera module on the smartphone to enhance the smartphone photography experience. We have seen similar offerings from manufacturers like Coolpad, HTC, LG, Apple etc. but Huawei’s implementation with the dual camera module with the Honor 6X is interesting. Huawei has tried hard to bring the benefits of two lenses instead of one in a mid-range smartphone with high-end specifications. As a result, they developed the first mid-range smartphone Honor 6X with dual camera.

What’s the second camera on Honor 6X for?

The Honor 6X features a primary 12 megapixel Sony IMX386 sensor and the 2MP auxiliary sensor which is purely used to capture depth information. You can adjust the aperture from f/16 to as down as f/0.95 for a very stylistic bokeh effect. Bokeh is where the background blurs and the subject stays in sharp focus; it used to be achievable on only DSLRs.

How do the two cameras on Honor 6X work together?

Both the cameras in the Honor 6X do two different things. Just to recall the Honor 6X front features a 12-megapixel primary camera with Sony IMX386 sensor and the 2MP auxiliary sensor is purely used to capture depth information which can be taken advantage of using the camera’s wide aperture mode. The wide aperture mode lets you adjust the aperture from f/16 to as down as f/0.95 for a very stylistic bokeh effect. The secondary camera helps in capturing the depth that allows a blur effect to the image’s background digitally. Later the unique imaging algorithm engine integrates the image information captured by the dual lens camera into one image. This combination of two lenses makes the photo more vivid and detailed. Interestingly the phone stores the image’s original data that can be used later to change the aperture and points of focus even after capturing the shot.

Does it actually take good photos?

The honor 6X has a solid camera for a budget phone that even does reasonably well in low light and at night. In bright light conditions, the rear camera for honor 6X makes its place as one of the best camera smartphones in budget smartphone segment. Here are a few camera samples captured using the honor 6X do have a look.

Benefits of dual camera over single:

  • Photos will be more crisp and clear
  • Helps to take Wide aperture shots
  • Helps to achieve better depth of field effect and controlled focus in images
  • Helps to zoom in the image without compromising the quality
