Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge First Impressions

Samsung Electronics today launched their flagship smartphone, Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge in India. These two smartphones redefine the convential Samsung Galaxy experience which the company has been dragging along like forever. The S6 edge comes with a curved edge design on both sides kind of like what is present on the Note edge. The S6 on the other hand has the conventional flat screen display.

Both the smartphones feature a high resolution Super AMOLED QHD display with 577ppi on the S6 and 576ppi on the S6 edge. Both the smartphones have a glass front and back with aircraft grade aluminium edges. To be honest, after a long time we have been impressed with a Samsung smartphone in its first impressions. Both the handsets looks beautiful in its design. S6 edge has the upper hand providing the unique experience of the curved edges adding to what S6 already does. The display on the smartphones as always being from Samsung flaunts its colors adding on to overall build.

Considering technical aspects, instead of going mainstream with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 chipset, Samsung has powered this year’s flagship series with its own Exynos 7420 octa-core (2.1GHz quad-core+1.5GHz quad-core) chipset paired with 3GB of RAM. The smartphones feature 16MP rear camera with OIS (optical image stabilization) and a 5MP front facing camera. For the first time, Samsung smartphone does not come with an microSD card support and a non-removable battery. The smartphone comes with a 2550mAh battery supporting fast charge, wireless charging and UltraPower saving mode. The smartphone also comes with a heart rate monitor and an improved fingerprint scanner. Apart from the obvious connectivity options including WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, NFC, IR Blaster it do supports LTE.

The smartphones run on Android 5.0 Lollipop packed under a thick layer of TouchWiz. Surprisingly, this time the OS ran pretty smooth and there was no delay on closing and opening applications. Heck, even camera app performed exceptionally well. But just for your information, this being our initial impressions doesn’t ensures that on filling up the free space with applications we might not face the typical degraded performance. To comment on that we have to test it for a while.

The S6 edge has its own pros of curved edges which though can be useful. There are a lot of things to test its usability, hence we shall keep it for our detailed review. The two smartphones come in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB variants priced at Rs 49,900, Rs 55,900 and Rs 61,900 respectively. The Galaxy S6 Edge is priced at Rs 58,900, Rs 64,900 and Rs 70,900 for 32GB, 64GB and 128GB respectively. Both the smartphones will go on sale starting April 10.
