For the past few days, foldable phones have been the talk of the town. Though Samsung has been more in the news, the other companies also kept popping now. One of them is Huawei, who unveiled Mate X foldable phone at MWC 2019 event.
It was a tease of a phone folding outwards, but now it’s a reality in the shape of the Huawei Mate X.
As said above, the screen folds outwards, means the display wraps itself on the outer sides of the device in its folding state. Unfolded, it’s a single uniform slab of 5.4mm (0.21 in) thick tablet and 11mm strip that’s located on the rightmost part of the back. It’s rather like a handle that gives you more grip and yes, it’s the home for the triple camera sensor as well. On folding, the back and the bulge form a uniform shape that does make the phone quite thick at 11mm.
On folding, both the slabs fit snugly with barely any gap between them. This is thanks to the super sophisticated hinge placed down the middle. Huawei calls it the Falcon Hinge and is made of 100+ different pieces.
In the folded state, both screens remain active hence, you just have to spin the device to use the other screen. The front is of 6.6 inches diagonal and the back is a bit small at 6.38 inches. In the unfolded state, the device has a large 2480 X 2200 AMOLED 8-inch display.
This year 5G is the new word flying in the sky and Mate X is definitely going to be part of it. The device is going to have super speeds allowing you to download 1GB in just three seconds. That does depend on your carrier though. Huawei has collaborated with NSA and SA architectures for the protocols and though, it’s not implemented yet, is going to be the one to ride on when the 5G tide comes out ways. Oh! It’s going to support dual SIM cards as well.
The phone runs on the Kirin 980 SoC and is the companies homemade chip that’s powering the Mate 20 Pro. The processor is of 7nm and is capable of giving high speeds of 2.6 GHz.
The device gets power from two batteries that are placed in two parts of the phone. Together, you get a 4,500mAh juice which should let you enjoy for some really good time. Especially, after their impressive Mate 20. You also get the 55 W fast charger from Huawei which charges 85% in just 30 minutes.
The triple camera on the back is developed under a partnership with Leila. The one telephoto, one wide angle and the ultra wide angle are in tow just like the sibling. The main camera works as a selfie shooter thanks to the outward folding design.
You can expect to see the device somewhere near the middle of 2019 and expectations are in for it to cost around €2,299 or $2,600.
