Sunrise calender after being acquired by Microsoft last year and merging it with Outlook is entering the next phase of its planned shutdown. The Sunrise team has announced that it will officially shut down on August 31. Last year in October, Microsoft officials said they planned to replace the standalone Sunrise calender app with the Outlook Mobile apps that would include built-in calendar functionality. Microsoft promised it wouldn’t shut down Sunrise until it could incorporate all of Sunrise’s features into Outlook, and it seems like it has made good on that promise. After August 31, there will be no new updates, bug fixes, or any support of the sort. Instead, if you’re hoping to continuing Sunrise-esque features, you’ll need to switch over to Outlook to see future implementations there.
Microsoft has been gradually improving the calendar that’s built into its Outlook iOS and Android apps. Just last month, Microsoft taking help from the Sunrise team added Facebook, Evernote, and Wunderlist integration into Outlook. Sunrise still includes support for a lot of other calendar services that aren’t yet integrated into the Outlook app, and current users will be hoping that Microsoft plans to add these in the coming months. We would recommend using Fantastical, which is just as good as Sunrise. If you use Google Calendar, the iOS and Android apps are really good too.
As heartbreaking as this sounds, we’re hard at work bringing the magic of Sunrise to the Outlook apps,” reads a message from the Sunrise team at Microsoft.
The entire Sunrise team is now working side-by-side with the Outlook team and it’s a thrilling moment for us to work on an app of this scale.
