OmniVision Technologies started the third day of the CES by unveiling its latest digital imaging sensor, a 1/4-inch CMOS chip which can shoot 720p HD video at 60fps. The OV9713 is based around the company’s new Omni-Pixel3-HS pixel architecture, which according to OmniVision leads to “excellent” low-light performance and improvements to both the sensor’s dynamic range and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).
The company envisions a variety of uses for the OV9713 that include entertainment, telepresence, and security monitoring implementations. Further, OmniVision touts reduced latency as a benefit of the 60ps framerate and says built-in HDR capabilities make the sensor a prime candidate for indoor situations with less-than-ideal lighting. The OV9713 is available now for sampling with volume production anticipated only in the second quarter so we can hope of seeing some devices with the strong sensors by OmniVision.
