A new report from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has surfaced information about a possible new ultra-wide-angle lens for the iPhone 13. Apple could end up using an updated 7P wide-angle lens for an ultra-wide-angle sensor, which should theoretically offer better low-light performance.
According to the report, Sunny Optical, a Chinese supplier of lens components, has successfully completed testing of its lenses for the iPad 5P. Mass deliveries of the 5P lens will likely begin in mid-2021, although it is not yet known which iPad model will receive it. So it is quite possible that they will deliver 7P wide-angle lenses for the iPhone 13 series later in 2021.
With the 7P lens, the iPhone 13 will have an ultra-wide-angle lens with an aperture of ƒ/1.8, which is wider than the current f/2.4, 5P lenses found in current iPhone 12 models. This wider aperture will significantly improve low-light performance.
However, conflicting rumors are circulating about which iPhone 13 models would get the updated lens. Barclays analysts Blaine Curtis and Thomas O’Malley predict that all four models in the iPhone 13 series will get it, while Ming-Chi Kuo expects only two top models to get it.
