We all know WebOS was a beautiful OS but it never got the attention it deserved but we are happy that atleast HP din’t totally bury the OS but rather it open sourced it but if you thought the latest versions of the Open WebOS would run on your WebOS devices then sadly we have disappointing news for you.
The folks at the Open-source WebOS team broke the news that the existing WebOS devices won’t support the Open WebOS and their decision is based on incompatible drivers and tons of proprietary components on existing devices. Those issues might be partly solved with new chips supporting the Linux 3.3 kernel or later.
For Open webOS we are aiming for support on future hardware platforms where SoC’s support Linux 3.3+ kernel and where open source replacements for proprietary components are integrated. Existing devices cannot be supported because of those many proprietary components, including graphics, networking and lack of drivers for a modern kernel.
This will certainly be a disappointment to who have supported webOS through difficult times and were looking forward to continued support but we hope this decision turns in favour of the OS and it comes out with some exciting hardware to boast of.
