Microsoft, in a stament obtained by Joystiq. has said that it is “conducting a thorough investigation” into claims from researchers that information can be swiped from used Xbok 360 consoles with simple molding tools. Microsoft claims that the “Xbox is not designed to store credit card data locally on the console” and that “it seems unlikely credit card data was recovered by the meted described.”
Drexel University research Ashley Podhrasky has said that her team managed to gain access to the console’s files and folders using software, enabling them to extract data that hadn’t been wide, despite a factory setting restore from a Microsoft authorized reseller. Microsoft has said that it has yet to receive any information needed to replicate the researcher’s claims, but assumes Xbox owners that “we take the privacy and security of their personal data very seriously.”
