Announced back in August 2011, Google’s attempt at purchasing Motorola Mobility is starting to take form. Yesterday Google announced that the European Commission has approved the takeover leaving only a few more bottlenecks, the approval of more authorities, including that of the US. The deal is expected to go through by the end of the quarter. Google’s main motive behind the purchase is to have both software and hardware under their wings, so that controlling their products could be easier.
It would also allow them to make more diverse products, including their next generation home entertainment systems. Motorola Mobility would also bring them a bunch of patents that would help Android out with the recent patent wars initiated by Apple and Microsoft. The deal is expected to be Google’s largest purchase to date.
