YU, the online brand from Micromax Informatics which has been quite in the buzz with its exclusive partnership with CyanogenMod Inc. today finally announced its first smartphone in India called as the Yureka. The local manufacturer signed a three year contract with CyanogenMod Inc. somewhat in Mid-2014 for supporting handsets in India, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. This agreement has been effective from September 26, 2014 and this is the reason why OnePlus One in India has been banned from selling their handsets with CyanogenMod.
CyanogenMod as we know, is one of the famous Android forks available to the enthusiasts to flash on their Android smartphones. Bringing this at an consumer centric level is definitely a commendable job by Micromax Informatics. The handset has been priced very aggressively under 10k like what it was expected from Micromax but 8,999INR was surprisingly good.
Talking about the handset, it packs a 5.5-inch HD IPS display with 720×1920 pixels resolution and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 chipset with Adreno 405 GPU. The Snapdragon 615 comes with an integrated 4G LTE Cat4 modem and 64-bit multi-core CPU to offer energy efficient performance. It comes with 2GB DDR3 RAM and 16GB internal memory which can be further expanded up to 32GB via a microSD card slot. It comes with a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front facing camera with wide angle aperture.
The smartphone definitely is up to the mark in specifications but it does not feel anything close to the word premium. To be honest, this is what we had expected from Micromax and at this price point it is kinda fair. The front has three capacitive keys and the back has a camera with YU branding in the middle. We couldn’t check the camera due to poor lighting conditions and would keep it later for the complete review.
Yureka will starts its registration from 19, December 2014 at 14:00 hours for its first sale exclusively on Amazon.in in January. Adding to this, Micromax launched the doorstep support for this handset. They have also allowed users to root their devices, without voiding the warranty alike Xiaomi and OnePlus in India.
