News: Nokia plans on shifting factory operations, cutting 4,000 jobs

Nokia today unveiled plans for changes at its factories in Komarom (Hungary), Reynosa (Mexico) and Salo (Finland). This follows a review of their smart phone manufacturing operations, they aim on increasing the company’s competitiveness in the global market.

These three factories are planned to focus on smart phone product customization, serving customers mostly in Europe and America. Device assembly will be transferred to Nokia factories in Asia, where most of their component suppliers are based.

Less work will be needed at the factories and thus Nokia plan on laying off 4,000 people by the end of the year. They will however offer a support program, including financial support and assistance with getting new jobs.
