News: Samsung Galaxy S III to feature wireless charging?

Wireless charging seems to be the next step forward for the new generation of phones and tablets. Korean publication DDaily has reported that Samsung’s Galaxy S III superphone will be the leader in wireless charging with an in built inductive charger.

Usually, if you want to wireless charge your phone, you could buy a replacement rear cover or even hack in an inductive charging coil yourself. But anonymous sources tell DDaily that the S III will has the technology right out of the box. It does seem like a likely story, with Samsung’s attitude of adopting forward looking connectivity, like its Kies Air desktop software for wirelessly syncing devices the the Galaxy S II MHL port. To be fair, webOS devices like the Palm Pre has internal inductive charging years ago.

Apparently, Samsung’s technology would work even if the device isn’t physically touching the charging surface, working as far as a meter or two away. The publication is reporting that Samsung would more likely use its own proprietary, patented charging method rather than the similar Fulton eCoupled method seen at CES. As of now, there’s no word on whether Samsung is forgoing a power port in favor of induction, but it may cost extra if so. Also, it is rumored that the company hasn’t decided on whether it will include the charging station in the package or if it will sell it separately.
