U.S. Department of Defense adds Xiaomi to blacklist of Chinese Military companies

The US Department of Defense has blacklisted Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi, which is reportedly controlled by the Chinese military. In response, Xiaomi vehemently denied these allegations and denied having any ties to the Chinese military.

Xiaomi was blacklisted by the US Department of Defense under the National Defense Authorization Act of 1999. This means that US investors will be required to sell shares or interests in the company before 11th November 2021.

However, this blacklist is not the same as the one on which HUAWEI was placed last year. This list blocks the purchase of parts and therefore any activity with American companies. It is unclear if Xiaomi will be added to this list in the future.

Xiaomi denied these allegations, saying they had nothing to do with the Chinese military.
