Infinix Smart 5 Review: The Budget Smartphone for Everyone!

Infinix has launched the Infinix Smart 5 in the sub-Rs. 8,000 price segments as an addition to its Smart series. It is the successor to the Infinix Smart 4 launched last year and continues the budget value for money traits as the predecessor. Here we have been using the Infinix Smart 5 for about a month now and here’s our comprehensive review. But first let’s run down the specifications.

Specifications

The device features a 6.8-inch HD+ IPS LCD panel with a waterdrop-style notch that houses the phone’s 8MP selfie camera along with the peak brightness of 400 nits. Under the hood, it is powered by the MediaTek Helio G25 chipset, which has four ARM Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 2.0GHz and four Cortex-A53 cores at 1.5GHz along with an IMG PowerVR GE8320 GPU. The device comes with a massive 6,000mAh battery that supports fast-charging up to 10W.

At the back, it sports a 13-megapixel main sensor along with a depth sensor. In the software department, it runs Android 10 with Infinix’s custom XOS 7 UI. It only comes in one variant, 2GB RAM, and 32GB internal storage which is priced at Rs.7,199. As per the price, Infinix is offering a decent device. Let’s talk further about the device.

Design and Display

The Infinix Smart 5 feels big in hand. The device features a 6.8-inch HD+ IPS LCD panel with a waterdrop-style notch. The display has a 20.5:9 aspect ratio. It’s an enormous display and the biggest we have seen in this segment. The display is surrounded by a good amount of bezels which is quite natural for this price. The display is quite good at the price point and visible in sunlight too. Infinix has made curved along the edges of the rear panel which makes the device comfortable to hold in hand.

The device weighs 207g which makes it among the heaviest smartphones in its price range. But this is a common trait for smartphones featuring a 6000mAh battery. The device also has a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner which is quite unseen in this segment. The power and volume buttons are located on the right side of the frame. The power button location is perfect but the volume rockers are a bit far to reach. The sim tray is located on the left. At the bottom, the device has a Micro-USB port, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and the primary microphone.

Infinix Smart 5 comes in four color variants: Morandi Green, 7° Purple, Obsidian Black, and Aegean Blue. The back panel is made of plastic with a glossy finish. Infinix had made the camera setup look like a triple camera setup but is actually a dual-camera setup.

Performance and Software

The Infinix Smart 5 is powered by the MediaTek Helio G25, which is also found on the Redmi 9A. The chipset has four ARM Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 2.0GHz and four Cortex-A53 cores at 1.5GHz along with an IMG PowerVR GE8320 GPU. This processor performs moderately in everyday tasks. One of the downsides of the device which is quite noticeable is that it comes one at one variant which is 2GB of RAM with 32GB of internal storage. We wished there should be a variant with 3/4GB RAM.

Talking about the software, it runs on Android 10 Go edition with Infinix’s custom XOS 7 UI running on top. Infinix’s XOS 7 UI has plenty of customizations but too much of it in a 2GB RAM-powered device makes the experience sluggish. Another thing that we didn’t like was that Infinix preloaded a few apps and games on the smartphone and some of them keep pushing notifications and we couldn’t find a way to uninstall the app but could be disabled. One thing to say is that the UI is easy to use and user-friendly. We found one thing that to avoid lags, the device constantly killed apps in the background to manage RAM.

Camera

The Infinix Smart 5 has a dual-camera setup with a 13-megapixel primary sensor and a depth sensor. At the front, it has an 8-megapixel camera and a selfie flash. The cameras are pretty average for the price point.

The camera app is very minimal and easy to use. The Daylight shots from the primary rear camera were decent and sometimes overexposed the sky. For the price the device comes at, the camera is just fine and gets the job done. The low light performance of the camera was very average with lack of details and colors. If we talk about the portraits, the camera has very poor edge detection. The front camera performance is pretty average in daylight. But in low light conditions, it struggles too much. If we talk about the videos, you can shoot videos up to 1080p resolution. Overall, the Infinix Smart 5 features a decent pair of cameras and we can’t complain much about the camera at this price point.

Connectivity and battery life

The Infinix Smart 5 supports Bluetooth 5, Dual 4G VoLTE as well as VoWiFi. The network reception was quite fantastic and we didn’t face any network drop. 4G Carrier Aggregation is not present in the device which is an obvious thing. If we talk about battery life, it is excellent. The massive 6000mAh battery coupled with the HD+ display did wonders. You can expect 2 days of battery life without any issue. But the only downside is the 10W charger provided in the box which is incredibly slow.

Conclusion

The Infinix Smart 5 is quite a decent offering from Infinix and if you are looking for a big display, a humongous battery, and your budget is less, this phone can be recommended to you. Still, you can consider its alternatives like the Micromax IN 1B or the POCO C3, which feature a slightly better processor. Overall the Infinix Smart 5 is a bang for the buck and for the price of Rs. 7,199 you can’t ask for more.

Pros:

  • Big 6.8 inches Display
  • Excellent Battery Life
  • Decent Performance
  • Camera’s are quite okay, nothing special but gets the job done
  • Excellent pricing

Cons:

  • Average Performance
  • Slow 10W Charger in the Box
