Micromax Canvas Turbo continues the legacy of the Canvas Series of smartphones that happen to be the flagship series for Micromax. Micromax broke sales records with it’s Canvas HD and ever since the Canvas has been associated with premium performance at the most attractive price.
Hardware :
The Micromax Canvas Turbo has a FULL HD IPS Panel that comes in at 440 pixel per inch on this 5.0 inch screen. This is again, a first on any Micromax device. Micromax says that the display is based on CGS (Continuous Grain Silicon) technology. We have to say, the display is bright and has viewing angles that are the best we’ve seen yet. It’s still fingerprint friendly since it’s glossy.
Build Quality :
The build quality of the Canvas Turbo has to be mentioned, it basically speaks about the phone a lot. The phone is 8.66mm thick, bit thinner than the Canvas 4, which was 8.9mm thick. It weighs just 137 grams even though it is made of aluminum. The phone takes in a microSIM , two to be precise, since it’s available in the Dual SIM version. There is even a Micromax branded SIM removal tool available, nice touch.
We like that they finally placed the 3.5mm headphone jack at the bottom, it is much more conveniently placed than before.
The back of the Micromax Canvas Turbo is non-removable since the SIM slots are on the side, however, the metal back is less slippery and the overall build is a big advantage that this phone has over any of it’s competitors.
Camera:
Micromax really wants you to look at it’s new camera UI called Cammerazzi. It is unlike any UI found on Indian OEMs devices. You have a GIF Animation, 3D panorama which is similar to the Google Sphere and Object Removal, which is a popular feature that lets you remove a moving object by taking burst shots.
That said we cannot say that the image quality is bad, it is much better, focusing isnt an issue anymore. Macro and outdoor shots are real crisp, details can be a bit less but you are not expected to print these pictures anyway. Night shots had the expected noise but the LED is powerful, sometimes so much that there is an overwhelming white. Still nothing that can make this a deal breaker.
Software:
The Canvas Turbo runs on Andorid 4.2.1 Jellybean and it’s about time we see an update rolling out. The UI is the exact same you would find on the Canvas 4 with the usual 5 home screens. Additionally one get’s M! Unlock with blow to unlock. Lockscreen widgets are available.
Other nifty gestures include : The Proximity incoming call feature that lets you switch off the screen just by hovering over the proximity sensor when you receive a call. One can also capture an image in the camera mode just by hovering over the sensor. The M security app is one of our favorites that secures your phone right out of the box.
Battery:
Micromax Canvas Turbo houses a 2000mAh battery and it seems to be enough just for a day of use. Although there is a big room for improvement here, but then battery life seems to an issue with all smartphones, we don’t expect the Turbo to spectacular in any way.
Conclusion:
We really liked the Micromax Canvas Turbo in our days of testing. It was a fun device to play around with. There have been a lot of subtle but essential value adds that are worth the upgrade if you are coming from anything else but the Canvas 4. The build quality has become even better and so has the display. Performance is decent as well and battery life strictly depends on personal usage. For a price of around 15,000 INR in the Indian market, the Canvas Turbo turns out to be a no-brainer.
