Samsung Galaxy S4 vs Lumia 920: Head-on Collision

Samsung Galaxy S4 the best smartphone from Samsung and one of the best Android smartphone to buy till date. With the mind boggling hardware specifications and camera this is a definite winner in the Android smartphone league but what about others? What if someone wants to choose Windows Phone or BlackBerry 10 or iOS?

Lets compare this Android beast with the popular Windows Phone 8 high end, Nokia Lumia 920 and find out the results below.

Build:

Nokia has always been a known for its build and the Finnish tech has proved again. Nokia Lumia 920 has a absolutely amazing build quality which feels quite sturdy & solid and at the same time bulky and heavy as a brick.

On the other hand, Samsung has put its best efforts on Galaxy S4 to give it this shape with a powerful beast inside. The way how they have kept 5 inch Super AMOLED full HD display with octa core processor and 2600 mAh battery in a thin 7.9mm thickness and 130gms weight is truly appreciable though not a strong build.

Hardware:

Galaxy S4 obviously packs a better set of hardware chipset when compared with the Lumia 920 as it was announced earlier in 2012. So the Galaxy S4 packs Exynos Octa 5410 chipset with octa core processor having Quad-core 1.2 GHz A7 CPU and Quad-core 1.6GHz A15 CPU with PowerVR SGX 544MP3 GPU, 2 GB RAM and 16GB internal memory with expansion option up to 64 GB via a microSD card slot. Nokia Lumia 920 has Qualcomm MSM8960 Snapdragon chipset with Dual-core 1.5 GHz Krait along with Adreno 225 GPU, 1GB RAM and 32GB internal storage with no further expandable option.

S4 has few more sensors giving a new use case for the device which include infrared and barometer. On the connectivity side, both S4 and Lumia 920 have equivalent network adapters which provide high speed internet access apart apart from some minimal differences. S4 takes the lead in the battery capacity comparison where the Galaxy S4 has 2600 mAh and on Lumia 920 it is 2000 mAh.

Display:

The screen on the Galaxy S4 is a major USP of the device. S4 sports a 5inches Super AMOLED full HD 1080p 441 ppi display with minimum bezel whose brightness and richness of colors declares it a winner while Lumia 920 flaunts its 4.5inch IPS LCD HD 332 ppi display with Nokia ClearBlack Technology.

Camera:

Nokia Lumia 920 is famous for only one thing and that is its camera so its very hard to compete here. Lumia 920 has a 8 MP Carl Zeiss optics lens rear camera with autofocus and dual LED flash and S4 has a 13 MP autofocus camera with LED flash no fancy stuff here. Though S4’s camera performs well but Lumia 920 has an edge with the camera advancements like optical image stabilization, Carl Zeiss lens and makes it one sided game.

Software:

Samsung Galaxy S4 runs on Android 4.2.1 operating system with a bunch of applications pre-installed running on touchwiz UI layering. These applications include S-heath, Samsung hub, S-translator and story album which when made to use in daily routine can change our perception about the bloatware.

At the other side, Nokia Lumia 920 runs on Windows Phone 8 operating system which has gorgeous looks but lacks in functionality. Windows Phone is a developing OS and can’t win over Android but a huge user base and community support.

Conclusion:

Both these phones being above 30k INR come under the expensive category. Until anyone have enough cash to spend, we expect people to look for the pros and cons before buying such expensive category products. There is a 7k price gap between the two devices with S4 being at ₹38,500 and Lumia 920 at ₹31,500.

Coming to the end, both Galaxy S4 and Lumia 920 are high end device which good hardware specifications or should I say best considering what S4 has. This conclusion depends on a few factors which comprises of hardware specifications, display, camera, design and the running operating system. Apart from camera which is a major USP for Lumia 920, S4 is a clear win over 920 as we read above. We get it that Windows Phone don’t need that octa core processor and the rest but still all this matters in the overall comparison. Above all the decision comes to Android vs Windows Phone what are you planning for and definitely the price.
