Infinix S4 Review: Impressive Design, Triple cameras on a budget price

With the smartphone capabilities increasing day by day out in the world, there are new features introduced. But at what cost? You are wrong if you think that the revolutionary features are introduced in the flagships and will take a year or so to be equipped in the budget range devices. Infinix has been putting great effort into making budget-friendly smartphones and is back with Infinix S4.

The Infinix S4 and it has almost everything a latest flagship now has. But how good are the components that are introduced? Well, we have been testing the device for quite a good amount of time and read out the review below to see what’s in the keep.

Here’s our review of the Infinix S4:

Design and Display of Infinix S4

The design of the Infinix S4 is pretty familiar because Infinix has been following the similar design language for their devices this year. That being said, yes, the design looks similar to that of what we have on the Infinix Smart 3 Plus. It has the same glossy with gradient finish on the back which is made of plastic. As soon as you get hold of the device, you feel the sleek design of the device which rather misses out on the luxurious feeling.

On the back, we have the triple cameras setup vertically and right below them is the quad-LED flash. Beneath them, it says AI triple camera since the cameras are AI-powered as claimed by Infinix. The fingerprint sensor is set in a perfect place where your finger finds itself as soon as you hold the device and below it is the Infinix branding.

The buttons on the Infinix S4 are not that great to be talked but they do provide instant action but there is this lack of the feeling. We get the volume rockers along with the power button on the right and SIM tray on the left. The bottom panel has a Micro USB placed at the center and there is a microphone along with the 3.5mm audio jack and the speaker grill on either side of it.

Coming to the front, we have a large 6.26-inch HD+ display with 720 x 1520 pixels which come with an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. On the top, we have the waterdrop notch which contains the 32MP selfie camera. The display is large enough to be enjoyed with multimedia but it lacks the vividness and the viewing angles are just okay because of the held back resolution in the name of cost-cutting. However, the display does get bright enough at 500 nits and is good enough to operate outdoors without any hassle.

Performance and Software of the Infinix S4

As the device itself falls under the budget range category, there is basically just a little you can expect from the processor. The Infinix S4 is powered by the MediaTek Helio P22 chipset bundled with PowerVR GE8320 GPU. The Helio P22 is an octa-core 2.0GHz and this combined with the 3GB RAM along with 32GB of internal storage. The processor and the 3GB of RAM support the device well and can easily drag you through without any hassles with mediocre usage.

That being said, we tested out the device in a similar way we test any device. Here, the Infinix S4 did struggle to keep between multi-tasking and would eventually slow things down a bit. As far as gaming is concerned, any small games would work totally fine with no apps running in the background but if you are looking at high-end gaming, this device will surely disappoint you.

The Infinix S4 runs on the Android 9.0 Pie with company’s own custom UI XOS 5.0 on top of it. Since it is a custom UI, the device is packed with many features in and out including plenty of bloatware with pre-installed apps and company-owned apps. Although you can uninstall the pre-installed apps on this device, you cannot uninstall the company-owned apps unless you have root access.

Cameras

Finally down to cameras, this is something you can look out for, in the Infinix S4. The device is equipped with a triple rear camera setup coming with a primary 13MP sensor with f/1.8 aperture, an 8MP 120-degrees ultra-wide angle lens with f/2.2 aperture, and a 2MP depth sensor. These three sensors are bundled with a quad-LED flash which throws a good amount of light.

The stock camera app comes with plenty of modes and features. For instance, you get a video, AI cam, beauty, bokeh, and AR modes which help you take a perfect shot. The AI mode will certainly help you in improvising the photo in certain parameters.

The photos we took from the rear camera came out pretty good with the primary sensor. Again, in the broad daylight or where there are good lighting conditions, the camera won’t disappoint you at all. The color reproduction and the details are up to the mark even in the macro shots, also thanks to the quick auto-focus. When shifted to the wide-angle mode, the shots did come out pretty basic. Everything’s good but when you are in bad-lighting conditions, the photos were just not up to the par. Even in the portrait or bokeh mode, the edge detection is not that great but is still fine considering the price point.

Coming to the front camera, the Infinix S4 has a 32MP AI selfie camera which takes some crisp selfies with great detailing. The selfies were satisfying enough even in low light conditions but the bokeh mode is just not that great. You can check out the samples for yourself below.

Battery and Miscellaneous

The Infinix S4 packs a 4000 mAh battery which will certainly last you a whole day. In our tests, the device held up pretty well throughout the day with the running multiple services like browsing, social media, YouTube, and a bit of gaming. All this, and I still was left with enough juice to use until night at home. The only downside is that the device does not come with fast charging support and it takes at least 3 hours to fully charge the massive 4000 mAh battery.

The device comes with a 3.5mm audio jack through which the output for many earphones is good enough and the speakers do pump out loud volume but lack in the bass and feel. If you are looking for wireless connections, the device comes with a Bluetooth 5.0 which is certainly fast in connecting and saves the battery to a great extent. It supports dual 4G along with VoLTE and the device comes with an FM Radio app pre-installed.

The Verdict of the Infinix S4

The Infinix S4 falls under the budget range segment and it has everything which a smartphone in this range doesn’t. It has a triple-rear camera setup, 32MP selfie camera, fingerprint sensor, a huge battery, and a large display, everything at Rs.8,999. Keeping the downsides aside, the device holds up strong because of its price. If you are someone looking for a budget smartphone with plenty of features and use it in a moderate way, the Infinix S4 can totally vouch for you

What’s good?

  • The triple rear camera and 32MP selfie camera
  • Huge 4000 mAh battery
  • Large display
  • Impressive Build and Design
  • The Rs. 8999 price tag

What’s not good?

  • It has a lower 720p HD resolution
  • Performance not up to the mark
  • Lots of bloatware
