Design
Coolpad Cool Play 6 might remind of some smartphone from the past, for us it was Cool Dual 1 launched a while back from the same company. The design of the smartphone is not unique but it’s good because there isn’t anything new which can be unknown to a user.
The front is absolutely clean with a 5.5-inch display in the center and two broad chin at the top and the bottom. The smartphone is constructed out of metal which provides a premium feel and strength along with it.
The back has metal all across apart from the top and bottom separated by the antenna lines after which the build is made out of plastic. Though the design and its implementation are done so well, that it will be difficult to figure out that it’s plastic there. There is fingerprint sensor at the back, below the dual-rear camera module.

Performance
Talking about its performance, as we may already expect from its beefy specs the smartphone is an absolute pleasure. Powered by a Snapdragon 653 which is an excellent SoC for regular usage, along with 6GB of RAM there will never be a chance that you might find this smartphone stuttering unless you install a shitty app by yourself. App launch was quick and multitasking was a breeze without worrying about clearing apps in the background, thanks to ample RAM and improved Android mobile operating system. We did test running a few games like the Asphalt Nitro, Need for Speed and Injustice Among Us and they all ran pretty well. We never experienced a frame drop or graphical glitches during the gameplay.
To add-on, the display on the smartphone is a pleasure to watch. Somehow this 1080p is quite capable and we are surprised to see such rich colors, and clear text along with sufficient brightness even in outdoors. The reflective panel doesn’t play along much but it’s not a major issue even in bright sunlight.
There might be occasional thermal issues while gaming for a while. Using the smartphone while charging increases the core temperature but otherwise there aren’t any complaints that we could report.
Coolpad Cool Play 6 runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat based Journey UI which is a new effort from Coolpad to cut down their custom UI skin. Journey UI has been designed to keep things close to the stock and they are improving upon it timely. The battery on the smartphone easily handles a day of heavy usage which includes my texting, calling, half an hour to an hour of YouTube playback along with browsing my social feeds throughout the day.
Camera
The dual-rear camera is not a thing exclusive to high-end handsets as we already saw a few offerings in the budget price segment as well. Coolpad Cool Play 6 comes with 13MP dual-rear sensor combination, one of which is an RGB sensor while the other is monochrome. This dual-sensor combination at the back enables the user to capture a bokeh shot along with their usual respective functionality. Adding to this, the front comes with an 8MP sensor which doesn’t disappoint.
Camera UI on Coolpad Cool Play 6 is quite minimal and fairly self-explanatory. Camera performance of the dual-rear sensors is quite satisfactory. The details captured in broad daylight are rich and offer vivid colors. The bokeh captures from the duo also turn out to be good though one needs to take care of the lighting conditions. HDR mode enhances the details in a click without messing around the originality of the composition. Low light shots turned out to be grainy but its acceptable at this price point.
The front shooter captures great selfies. There is an HDR mode on the front as well, which can be used if judged wisely. Overall, not the best but doesn’t disappoint.
Our Verdict
As claimed by the company, Coolpad has been a trendsetter in the country. Starting with the Coolpad Note 3 or the Coolpad Note 3 Lite, it was them who launched the most affordable smartphone with 3GB RAM and fingerprint sensor. Similarly, with the Coolpad Cool Play 6, the company is trying to offer high-end specs at a mid-range price to make this luxury accessible for those who are not willing to spend a bomb.
The smartphone has all the likes of a high-end brought in a package that not disappoints. Retailing at a price of ₹14,999 in India exclusively through Amazon.in, the Coolpad Cool Play 6 is available in Gold and Black color variants. This will for sure rank in our recommendation list for smartphones under 15k and maybe who knows you might get a discount soon.
