Some Nokia insiders claim that Nokia’s MeeGo-based S40 successor that was killed off last week, was very close to being ready for release to the market.

A newly created LinkedIn group called ‘MDP Alumni’, which was started by Eckhart Köppen, who used to head the Qt Release Engineering team and suggested that the project was close to completion, before being killed off in recent budget cuts by the Finnish giant.

The news broke today, on the one-year anniversary of the Nokia N9’s release, which also carried an Operating System that was killed by Nokia, MeeGo, which was what Meltemi was believed to be based on. Meltemi brings the count of OS’s killed by Nokia to three; Symbian, MeeGo and Meltemi, all of which looked much more promising than Nokia’s current offerings.
