Last month Twitter started testing a new audio platform called Spaces for restricted users. To continue its development, Twitter has acquired Breaker, another podcast application that includes some community and social elements.

Breaker was launched in 2016 and has just released applications for iOS and Android in 2020. After the takeover, Breaker will enter service on the 15th of January. In a blog post, the Breaker team described a way to transfer existing podcast subscriptions to another service.

FYI: There has been a number of high-value tech (non-content) acquisitions in the podcasting space:

  • Anchor, $140M
  • Megaphone, $235M
  • Simplecast, $28M
  • AdsWizz, $66M

Spaces is a project launched by Twitter to create a new platform for secure communication between users and their followers. The entire Breaker team will be helping with the development of Spaces on Twitter, but it is unclear which aspect of Twitter Spaces the Breaker team will be working on.
